Uk Brimstone Missile - The Brimstone is a surface-launched or air-launched ground attack missile developed by MBDA UK for the Royal Air Force of the United Kingdom.

It was originally designed for use against massed formations of Amy armor, using an active millimeter wave (MMW) radar seeker to ensure pinpoint accuracy against moving targets. Experience in Afghanistan led to the addition of laser guidance to the dual-mode Brimstone missile, which allowed a "spotter" to select specific, high-priority targets, particularly useful for reducing collateral damage to forces or civilians in the area. The tandem warhead is more effective against modern tanks than older similar weapons such as the AGM-65G Maverick missile. Three Brimstones are carried in a launcher that occupies a single weapons station, allowing an aircraft to carry multiple missiles.

After a long-term development programme, the Brimstone saw service in single-mode or 'millimeter' mode with the RAF's Tornado aircraft in 2005 and with a dual-mode variant in 2008. The latter was widely used in Afghanistan and Libya. The revised Brimstone 2 was expected to enter service in October 2012, but problems with the new TDW and ROXEL rocket motor warhead pushed the planned date back to November 2015.

Raf's Brimstone Capability Used For The First Time

MBDA is studying the use of sulfur from ships, attack helicopters, UAVs and surface launchers. However, it will not be integrated into the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II.

Germany, Qatar and Saudi Arabia bought this missile. The cost of each missile in 2015 is £175,000,

The missile was to be an evolution of the original laser-guided AGM-114 Hellfire missile, with the laser seeker replaced by a millimeter wave (mmW) seeker. During development, the tire missile was practically redesigned, resulting in a weapon that, apart from the external shape, bears no relation to the original. It is not related to the separate development of the mmW Hellfire for the Apache Longbow attack helicopter.

The Brimstone has a 6.3 kg (14 lb) tandem warhead that uses a small initial charge of about 100 g (0.22 lb), designed to initiate reactive armor, followed by a larger, more destructive charge of 6.2 kg (14 lb) is designed for Pirate and defeats base armor.

Sulfur was estimated to be several times more effective than the AGM-65G Maverick and 20 times more effective than the BL755 cluster bomb against modern tanks.

Air Chief Marshal Sir Steph Dalton said 98.3% to 98.7% of Brimstone's shots in Libya "did what we expected".

The Brimstone is a "fire-and-forget" missile, loaded with targeting data by the Weapon Systems Officer (WSO) prior to launch. It is programmable to suit specific mission requirements. This ability includes the ability to detect targets within a given area (like the nearby Fridley Force) and the ability to self-destruct if unable to detect a target within a designated area.

In addition to the semi-autonomous ability to determine its own targets, Brimstone has the ability to determine which target deals the most damage. The missile's advanced ssor package includes its very high frequency millimeter wave radar, which allows the weapon to take images of the target and thereby select the target's location. With up to twenty-four missiles in the air, the missile's guidance system also required an algorithm to ensure that the missiles hit their targets in sequence rather than simultaneously.

Brimstone can be fired in a number of attack profiles; Directly or indirectly against single targets, columns of targets or series of targets. The latter uses the salvo attack ability for multiple kills per gadget. Once launched, the platform is free to move away from the target area or acquire other targets.

Each launch system carries three missiles on rails. This allows a single aircraft to carry a large number of missiles; For example, the Typhoon fighter can carry six launch systems, giving a maximum payload of 80 Brimstone missiles in addition to a useful air-to-air payload. The missile was carried by Tornado GR4 aircraft in service with the RAF.

In February 2014, the National Audit Office warned of a potential capability gap in existing plans to field the Typhoon from Brimstone in 2021, two years after the Tornado was withdrawn; In June 2014, the Ministry of Defense announced a study to accelerate this to 2018 and find a common launcher that could also launch SPEAR Cap 3.

It was decided that the Brimstone would be integrated into the RAF Harrier fleet under Capability D of the JUMP program with an expected entry into service date of 2009.

Britain Adds Brimstone 2 To Ukraine's Arsenal

By late 2009 the Brimstone was "nearing completion for integration into the Harrier", but in July 2010 it was reported that it would be delayed until a non-material version of the missile became available in 2012.

Brimstone was not officially approved for use on the type as UK Harriers were withdrawn from service in late 2010.

The Brimstone was developed by Marconi Defense Systems and Rockwell International in the late 1980s to meet the RAF's need for a long-range anti-armor weapon, which required attack aircraft to engage armored vehicles at a distance and be more effective than guns older ones . .

This requirement was issued in 1982 to replace the BL755 cluster pump. The program was initially canceled in the 1990s during the Cold War, but resumed in 1992 following an assessment of the British military's performance in the Gulf War.

GEC-Marconi (whose missile interests are now part of MBDA) was originally awarded the contract on 7 November 1996.

The first land-based firing of the Brimstone missile took place in August 1999, followed by the first air launch of the Tornado GR4 in September 2000. Authorization of the missile was delayed by 12 months due to the unavailability of the Tornado test aircraft. The RAF chose to fast-track development of the Storm Shadow air-launched cruise missile ahead of the Iraq war, but redesigning the autopilot for a safer launch at higher speeds caused another 6-month delay. More than 2,000 missiles were produced.

Under an urgent operational requirement in 2008, the detectors and software of more than 300 existing missiles were modified to create the dual-mode Brimstone.

The new missiles can be laser guided to the STANAG 3733 standard and retain the millimeter wave seeker; The pilot can select either mode from the cockpit or use both at the same time.

Laser guidance enables accurate Amy target selection in chaotic environments, mmW radar ensures accuracy against moving targets.

A figure inflated by accounting expenses related to delays. Development of the dual-mode version will cost an additional £10 million.

Which is comparable to the cost of the AGM-65 Maverick; The Ministry of Defense gives a total book value of just £175,000, which includes development costs as well as the purchase price of the missile.

Upgrading a single-mode missile to dual-mode costs between £35,000 and £45,000 plus VAT, depending on the quantity ordered.

Brimstone Missile To Be Integrated Onto Raf's Protector Rg Mk1 Aircraft

In March 2010, Sulfur was selected as the basis for the RAF requirement in the SPEAR (Selective Precision Effects at Range) Capability 2 Block 1 programme.

The demonstration and production contract "significantly" increased the missile's performance and converted the warhead and rocket motor to use ineffective munitions.

Brimstone 2 features an improved seeker, a more modular design, and improved airframe and software for an "overall increase in performance with improvements in range and caliber footprint."

A five-launch test campaign in October 2013 resulted in a successful attack on a pickup truck traveling at 110 km/h (70 mph) on an unpaved road. Brimstone 2 was scheduled to enter service on Tornado in November 2015,

It has been successfully integrated into the Tornado GR4 and tested on the Eurofighter Typhoon and the AH-64E Apache.

In February 2016, Tornado GR4 integration tests fired 11 missiles against "targets [at] the edge of [various] structures, a very small fast-moving vehicle, and the weapon system's performance envelope." A total of 10 of the 11 missiles or 91% were successful; The only missile to miss its target involved a very short-range shot in which the missile's millimeter-wave and semi-active laser guidance seekers did not have time to effectively acquire its target.

In July 2016, MBDA proposed a new variant of the Brimstone 2 for the Apache AH-64E. It will be especially for unarmored targets in the land and sea zone, but will not compromise the Brimstone's anti-armor capability. It will feature a selectable trajectory in the launch aircraft cockpit, which will allow a line-of-sight indicator (flat trajectory) and high and low missile flight profiles to avoid nearby obstacles; a selectable capability in the cockpit that allows the pilot to determine the altitude and angle of impact on the target to maximize the effect of the weapon; and a new set of warhead modes, including delayed, airburst, impact, and proximity fusion. This weapon will be known as the Future Attack Helicopter Weapon (FAHW).
